The Clothes Iron And Its Vital Role In Your Lifestyle

By Sharon Pierre

Since the development of social status about 7,000 years ago the types of clothes people wear symbolized their social status. Other societies adorned their body with fabrics and associated with this fad on clothes is the smoothening of wrinkles from fabric, which wrinkles were believed to represent chaos or disaster. Because of this, clothes iron was invented. Over time this invention has been improved from simple ho metals to today's technologically advanced electronic irons.

Ironing clothes is done in almost every society in the world thus it can be said that it is a practice embedded in our culture. It is done by most people almost every day, if not, once a week. Clothes are ironed to look presentable and as a sign of respect to ourselves and to others. Hence, learning about the tool we use in smoothening our clothes and the proper ways to use it can be fascinating.

Various types of clothing irons are made up of various parts. There are also various types of this appliance-such as electric irons, steam irons, etc. Nonetheless, all clothes irons are made for one sole purpose-to remove wrinkles from fabric. So how does a clothes' iron work? To smoothen clothing, irons work by heating the molecules within the fabric so they become loose. This is done through the iron's bottom exterior called the soleplate which can be made from materials like aluminum, stainless steel, or non-stick coating. The weight of the pressure exerted on the iron flattens the fabric. The new flat shape is then retained when the fabric cools, hence, producing wrinkle-free clothing.

Various types of fabric require various heat temperatures to remove wrinkles. Certain fabrics such as cotton are more difficult to iron as they have molecular bonds that are more difficult to alter and hence require higher temperatures. Ironing also differs on the type of clothing being ironed. However, many are unaware of such that they often damaged their clothing because of their poor ironing procedures. The following are useful tips when ironing. First, it is a must to "preheat" the iron before use. It is also suggested to cover the ironing board with aluminum foil to reflect the heat the iron produces, hence, helping to heat the fibers of the garment on both sides. For extra thick fabrics, the inside part of the garment should be ironed first before working on the outside. It is also important to hang the ironed clothing immediately after the process is completed. Finally, it is necessary to read the label of the piece of clothing you are to iron as this will give you necessary information on how to remove wrinkles from the said fabric.

In ironing clothes some people often make mistakes, some being done even before the process is started. One of the common mistakes when ironing is over drying of clothes making them difficult to reshape. The use of sprayer when ironing is also often forgotten which allows the wrinkles to fall out of the clothing as you iron. Starting ironing with heavy fabrics is also a common mistake. Keep in mind that heavy fabrics require higher temperature when ironing which is why it is recommended to start with lighter fabrics.

Using electric irons or any other clothes iron is no easy task. As such, it is a must to properly educate oneself on the process of ironing clothes before doing the said task so as to avoid accidents that may range from mild burns and damaged clothing to even huge fires.
